PIPE MATERIAL SELECTION

PIPE MATERIAL SELECTION

Buried piping for water transmission and distribution must resist internal pressure, external loads, differential settlements, and corrosive action of both soils and, potentially the water it carries.
General factors  considered in the selection of pipe include the following:
  • Service conditions
  1. Pressure (including surges and transients)
  2. Soil loads, bearing capacity of soil, potential settlement
  3. Corrosion potential of soil
  4. Potential corrosive nature of some waters
  • Availability
  1. Local availability and experienced installation personnel
  2. Sizes and thicknesses (pressure ratings and classes)
  3. Compatibility with available fittings
  • Properties of the pipe
  1. Strength (static and fatigue, especially for water-hammer)
  2. Ductility
  3. Corrosion resistance
  4. Fluid friction resistance (more important in transmission pipelines)
  • Economics
  1. Cost (installed cost)
  2. Required life
  3. Cost of maintenance and repairs

PIPES HANDLING, TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

 PIPES HANDLING

Pipes handling includes various activities such as transport, off-loading, lifting, store and lowering in to trentch. There can be seen damages in linings, coatings and sleevings as a result of improper handling.
Damage to pipes & fittings is caused by:

  • Insecure load on lorry
  • Improper use of handling equipment
  • Use of unsuitable handling equipment
  • Incorrect stacking methods
  • Improper storage of joint components
  • Unloading on uneven or slopping ground
  • Impact between pipes
On receipt, pipes & fittings are inspected for damaged to:
  • The pipe or fitting itself
  • Linings
  • External protection system
  • Factory applied sleeving
  • Jointing surfaces

TRANSPORT
Care should be taken to ensure that…
  • They are secure
  • No more than an absolute minimum of movement can take place during transit
  • he sides or ends of pipes are not in contact with projecting bolts etc.
OFF-LOADING
Smaller Diameter Pipes are unloaded manually.
And larger Diameter Pipes are unloaded using cranes
  • The lifting machine shall be of the type which retains the loads safely in the event of a power failure.
  • Hooks should be well padded to prevent damage to the pipe and should be fitted with a locking device.
  • Steadying ropes are essential.
Consideration in determining suitable handling equipment:
  • Pipe weights
  • Type of stacking
  • Outreach required
  • Site conditions

STORAGE

As these pipes are used to supplying water, special care is taken to ensure they are not contaminated by the ingress of soil, animals, fuel oils, chemicals etc.

  • End caps are used to minimize the risk.
  • They are not stored where there is a risk of serious contamination.
When store long term, they are located where there is least risk of damage. Pipes being taken to a central stock-ground for storage and held pending further distribution are arranged in stacks. The stacking area provides a firm foundation with a suitable approach road for vehicles. Stacks are arranged so as to provide safe vehicular and pedestrian access. It is considered that during stacking and removal operations, safe access to the top of the stack. Another consideration take in to account is becoming slippery of pipe surfaces under bad weather conditions.
Normally pipes are stacked so as to form a pyramid. But parallel stacking is also a recommended staking type.

Pyramidal stacking

In pyramid stacks, each pipe nestles between the two pipes immediately beneath it. And care must be exercised when lowering pipes into position, especially to prevent damage to protective coatings and sleevings. It is essential that the end pipes of the bottom tier be securely anchored along their length with chocks, preferably fixed to timbers, running the width of the stack. The axes of all pipes should be in the same direction, and the sockets should be reversed in successive tiers.

Parallel stacking by using timbers

For this method of stacking, two timber battens of sufficient strength should be placed across the pipes between each tier. The sockets of pipes in each successive tier should be reversed and the battens should be of sufficient thickness to avoid metal-to-metal contact. An adequate number of chocks should be wedged under the outer pipes of each tier and nailed to the bearers to ensure stability.

HDPE PIPES

TYPES OF PIPES USING IN THE PROJECT

HDPE PIPES

HDPE pipe is widely used in water distribution systems.

Advantages

  • Quick Installation. Due to its lightness, the transportation, handling and installation process is shortened. Besides, it doesn’t need heavy machine to move it.

  • Flexibility. They are adapted to changes of direction and bends, so they don’t do fittings or additional tools. In comparison, it is more flexible than the polyethylene.

  • Safety. They are not used together as the welding is done by thermofusion welding,

  • Efficiency. Due to its flat inside part, they facilitate a flow of liquids to the pipes of other materials. Besides, they don’t accumulate sediments or incrustations inside

 Disadvantages

  • No fire resist
  • Temperature resistance limited water
  • Rapid crack propagation
  • Can not paste or threading

UPVC PIPES

uPVC pipe is normaly used in water distribution systems to  house connections.

Advantages

  • Light weight- Ease of handling and laying
  • Very durable
  • Very smooth
  • Liners and wrapping not required
  • Can use ductile iron fittings with adapters
  • Excellent flow characteristics
Disadvantages
  • Limited resistance to cyclic loading
  • Unsuited for outdoor use above ground
  • Suitable only for relatively low pressure duties

DUCTILE IRON (DI) PIPES

Ductile iron pipe is generally suitable for all pipeline applications.

Advantages

  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Wide variety of available fittings and joints
  • Wide range of available thicknesses
  • Good resistance to water-hammer
  • High strength for supporting earth loads
Disadvantages
  • Relatively expensive
  • Difficult to weld
  • May require wrapping or cathodic protection in corrosive soils
Although, fairly resistance to corrosion, internal and external protective coatings with bitumen or coal tar are standards.
For aggressive water or soils, further protection such as cement motar resin internal lining and external bituminous sheathing, protective tape or polythene sleeving may be necessary.

TYPES OF PIPES USING IN THE PROJECT

Pipe sections are the most abundant elements that can be identified in the water distribution network. These sections are constant in diameter and may contain fittings and other appurtenances, such as valves, storage facilities, and pumps. In water supply schemes, most commonly use pipe types (considering the pipe material) by NWSDB are:
